Anyone who was a victim of Facebook's major data leak in 2021 now has the chance to defend themselves - at no risk to themselves. The Federal Association of Consumer Centres has initiated a lawsuit against Meta to enforce compensation for those affected.
What happened? In 2018 and 2019, a security leak made it possible to read the mobile phone numbers of Facebook users on a massive scale. In 2021, the complete data set with over 500 million entries appeared online. The Federal Court of Justice later clarified that the loss of control over personal data alone can give rise to a claim for damages - without any further concrete damage.
Those affected can join the test case at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court free of charge. Anyone who finds their number in the leaked data record can claim at least 100 euros - in some cases even up to 600 euros if other personal information was also published.
You can find out whether you are affected and how you can take part at sammelklagen.de. But be careful: The deadline is three weeks after the last hearing at the latest - so act now.
