With the update to iOS 18.4, Apple's new AI functionality ‘Apple Intelligence’ has arrived - it brings text assistants, image generation and personalised emojis directly to the smartphone. This is also made possible by the integration of external services such as ChatGPT from OpenAI. While Apple emphasises that many processes are handled locally on the device, certain user data still ends up in the cloud for processing - and in some cases on third-party servers.
The Bavarian consumer advice centre takes a critical view of this: although the technology is helpful in everyday life, it can also contribute to the unnoticed transfer of data. The handling of sensitive information that is processed by external providers is particularly sensitive - different data protection rules apply here. Users should therefore check their device settings carefully after the update and restrict functions if necessary. Despite all protective measures, a certain risk cannot be completely ruled out.
