A feature is currently being trialled in a pre-release version of the WhatsApp messenger to give users more control over their content and how AI integrations are handled. The plan is that conversations and shared media can no longer be automatically saved or exported in future - provided that those involved activate a corresponding setting. The use of the meta AI assistant can also be restricted in group chats.
Although this protection does not prevent all sharing options - such as screenshots - it does make the unwanted distribution of entire chat histories much more difficult. The new function expands existing data protection options such as self-deleting messages and also addresses the increasing scepticism towards the new meta AI introduced in Europe. It is not yet known when these functions will be generally available.
